Seattle Print Arts is an association of artists, arts professionals and collectors who have an avid interest in the expanding field of print arts and an appreciation of the print media. Our mission is to foster intellectual and artistic dialogue, serve as a resource for news in the field of printmaking, forge links between artists, and serve as a base for a variety of activities that focus on the print arts.
Since its formation in January 2000, Seattle Print Arts has organized symposia, lectures, print exchanges, demonstrations, and several print exhibits, including two international exchange exhibitions.
Seattle Print Arts also sponsors a printmaking scholarship at Seattle's Pratt Fine Arts Center, the Larry Sommers Art Fellowship, and the Inside Out Grant.

2011 Collectors Lecture Series event

Looking Beyond the Galleries, Building a Formidable Collection on a Budget with Brian Lane.
The Collectors Lecture Series event at Brian Lane's studio Print Zero treated Seattle Print Arts members to a unique perspective on collecting and a wonderful assortment of works on paper.
Brian Lane, self proclaimed "Budget Art Collector Extraordinaire," lead the evening with an impressive display of hundreds of prints spanning multiple centuries of print making history. He shared stories of purchasing prints at auction and other creative means of acquisition, while guests had plenty to look at his collection. "It was a cold night but we had wine, good art, and fellow print enthusiasts to keep us warm." says Tara Shadduck, Seattle Print Arts member
If you weren't able to attend the event, next time you see Brian make sure to ask him about his Kathe Kollowitz print!
Inside Out Art Award
Seattle Print Arts is pleased to announce the winners of our Inside Out Art Award. They are Margot Myers and Allison Hyde.

There will be more information about their work in upcoming newsletters. Also, we will soon be posting information about upcoming funding opportunities for small grants.
Visiting Artist Program
Sev Shoon Seattle Print Arts Davidson Galleries

Eunice Kim gave a wonderful presentation about her work on Saturday, November 12th at Davidson Galleries.
The audience was fortunate to get a peek into Eunice's studio life and practices through the images she shared with us, and her hands-on demonstration. Demonstrations provide an opportunity to witness and discuss elements of art-making not possible in more formal settings.
Thank you to Davidson Galleries, Eunice Kim, and everyone in attendance for a great event.

Ink Tour at Daniel Smith

Seattle Print Arts Member Tour
Recently, Seattle Print Arts members gathered at Daniel Smith for a fascinating tour of their ink manufacturing facility. We learned about the steps involved in blending dry pigments with burnt plate oil to create Daniel Smith's etching and lithography inks, as well as oils, acrylics and watercolors. There was machinery specifically designed to mix and grind the inks, but it is a real hands on operation; the etching inks are put into cans by hand! We all came away having a better appreciation of ink and with nice goodie bags of ink and paper samples. Seattle Print Arts looks forward to organizing more tours for members in the future.
Second Annual Larry Sommers Art Fellowship Recipient

Seattle Print Arts is pleased to announce that the recipient of this year’s Larry Sommers Art Fellowship is Michelle Forsyth. The Fellowship was established in memory of Larry with generous donations from colleagues, family and friends inspired by his passion for art and community activism.
Thank you to all the artists who applied. The selection committee received thirty -six applications. They were impressed by the quality of the work and diversity of media represented in all the submissions.
Michelle has proposed to use the Fellowship to honor Mt St Helens and the regeneration of life since the eruption thirty-two years ago. She will produce a series of prints incorporating pressed plant imagery on delicate paper and quotes from eyewitnesses. The works will be placed in library books on the subject and be discovered by the readers who open the pages

In addition Seattle Print Arts presented a Fellowship Merit Award to Portland artist John Shlichta in recognition of his work and commitment to print arts.
Thank you to all the artists who applied and to everyone who generously donated to the Fellowship in memory of our friend and colleague Larry Sommers. To find out more about this award or to make a donation, please click on the "Donate/Join" tab on the left.
