Artist's Statement
My paintings combine dry pigment, beeswax, damar crystals, oil and fire with collaged text and aggregates. Applying molten wax, and burning in with the torch, I explore evolving color fields and gritty surprise. Sculptural actions of scratching, scraping, and digging form the art object as a reliquary of personal and universal information. Segments of collage and text are visual components that relate to and give clues to content Organic forms and color fields in my work are the visual interpretations of nature's complexities and the inscrutability of human relationships. I layer up and dig down to discover a path. Repetitive marks, shapes, and colors cross the surface of my work to cover, and also to reveal, what has been layered beneath the surface, the play within a play. What is on the surface is not the only, or necessarily, the true, story. |
