Summer 2009: Continuing Education at North Seattle Community College.

Wednesdays 6-9 pm: 7/8/2009 - 8/12/2009 (6 weeks), $95

Printmaking: This printmaking class will cover the basics of linocut, monotype and drypoint. We will begin by developing a one-color linocut, create colorful, multilayered monotypes, and draw directly into a copper plate to make beautiful prints. Use of inks, papers, and tools explained and demonstrated as well as use of the press. Drawing background helpful, but not necessary.

Michelle is an nationally recognized artist known for her creative use of a wide variety of materials. She currently teaches Printmaking at California State University Northridge.

Northwest Encaustic:

The Art of the Miniature
Miniature painting has a rich history in many cultures. These are paintings that are generally small enough to put in your pocket. Explore encaustic miniature painting in this fun playful workshop. You will learn tools and techniques for fine manipulation of encaustic medium. You will construct small simple boxes that these paintings can be displayed and stored in. Miniature paintings can be done on metal, glass or wood substrates.

Discover the range of acrylic grounds, gels and mediums that can be used to create image transfers and gel skins. Learn how to create image transfer skins, painted skins and how to transfer images directly into the surface of your art. These techniques are an excellent way to develop translucent imagery, text and texture, incorporating layers into your paintings, collages or book arts. Thinking beyond the flat surface, many of these same methods can also be used to develop sculptural and 3 dimensional art works. Most materials are provided.

Crown Point is offering its summer workshops in June and July

Five weeks total, and there are still some spots available. (We are promoting the workshops through email and word of mouth; you might have noticed you did not receive a brochure in the mail this year.)

We still have spots available in the etching workshop weeks of June 22-26, July 6-10, 13-17, and 27-31. Photogravure is all full this year, as we are only offering three weeks this time around.

Mary Margaret Briggs WORKSHOPS

Spend two days - either a weekend or a pair of weekdays - with Mary Margaret in her Vashon Island Studio creating collages composed of botanical monotypes. On day one you'll select plants from Mary Margaret's garden, experiment with ink colors, and print monotypes on a Takach etching press. On day two you'll create your collage using monotypes made the day prior. Beginners welcome; no art experience needed.

Book Arts Workshop in Florence, Italy
with Cathy DeForest and Mary Laird at Santa Reparata International School of Art.

The Book as Art: Creating Artist Books is being offered by The Dan Welden International Firenze 2009 Workshops from August 6-27, 2009. This three-week course is for beginning and advanced book artists. Participants will be encouraged to use multiple mediums to create their books such as: painting, printmaking, mixed media, photography, fabric arts and found objects. Concentrated studio time as well as leisure time in the nearby Tuscan countryside will be woven into the workshop. Tours of Florence, Siena and San Gimignano are included. In addition to creating multiple artist books, there is an optional four-day trip to the Printmaking Biennalle in Venice. As a finale to the course, students will be invited to exhibit art at the Santa Reparta Gallery. A three-week workshop in solarplate etching with Dan Welden, pioneer of the solar plate process, is also offered at the same time.
